With a musical backdrop of MC Hammer’s “U Can’t Touch This,” the theme to "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and more, a lot of very happy millennials and Gen X-ers, many with their kids in tow, were at Cambrian College April 21 for a trip down memory lane.
The second annual Nostalgiacon, organized by Northern Gaming Events, celebrates “everything we grew up with as kids, reliving our youth,” said organizer Brad Davidson.
Want to buy vintage video games or records? Merch from your favourite 1980s or 1990s television show? Check out a real-life R2 D2 robot? Get your photo taken in a throwback photo booth? Those were all options at the event.
“You can see them walking around with smiles on their faces,” said Davidson.
The idea behind the event is to introduce today’s kids to things their parents grew up with, “whether it be the turntable, like record players or older video games," he said.
“Even now, with the ease of getting things off Netflix, people aren't buying DVDs anymore. So VHS, all that stuff. So we just figured, you know, let's put on an event that celebrates all of that stuff that's been in the past.”
The event featured plenty of cosplayers, especially those connected with the Star Wars universe, as there was a Star Wars theme at this year’s event.
There were also several special guests at Nostalgiacon, including David Bateson of Agent 47 and Hitman, Jane Perry of Hitman, Sam Tarasco of Trailer Park Boys, international horror icon Geretta Geretta and Astromech Builder Rob and his R2-D2 robot.
Nostalgiacon also featured a video game tournament, a dance show from Sudbury’s K-Pop, a live concert by Nickel City WInd Ensemble, and Hitman and Resident Evil guest panels.
