Rainbow board hosts workshop for students with special needs

Variety of service agencies will be on site to share information

Rainbow District School Board will host a seminar called Destination Readiness: Pathways for Students with Special Needs April 30.

The event runs 4-7 p.m. at the Local 6500 Hospitality, Conference & Education Centre (formerly the United Steelworkers Hall).

This free event aims to help students in Rainbow schools with needs and exceptionalities plan for their future.

“This event will be of interest to students, parents/guardians, caregivers, teachers and support staff,” said Danielle Williamson, principal of Special Education Programs and Services, in a press release. “A variety of service agencies will be on site to share information about support available to students during and after high school.”

Participants can tour displays and speak with staff about the high school experience as well as agency representatives regarding vocational and job supports, post-secondary learning opportunities, community and independent living, and financial support and management.

Participating agencies include: Adult and Youth Enrichment Centre; Adult Health and Wellness Centre; Autism Ontario; Cambrian College, Glenn Crombie Centre; Canadian Hard of Hearing Association; Canadian Hearing Services; Children's Community Network; Community Living Greater Sudbury; Compass; Developmental Services Ontario (DSO); Focus on Abilities Day Program; Future North; Georgian College, Community Integration Through Cooperative Education Program (CICE); Home and Community Care Support Services; IG Private Wealth Management; Independence Centre and Network (ICAN-CERD); Independent Living Sudbury Manitoulin; Karis Disability Services; L'Arche Sudbury; Learning Disabilities Association of Sudbury; March of Dimes Canada; My Center; Northern Ontario Assessment and Resource Centre; Northern Outreach and Clinical Services (NOCS); Northern Vocational Services; Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP); Respite Care Centre; Sault College, Community Integration Through Cooperative Education Program (CICE); Special Olympics of Ontario - Sudbury; Sudbury Community Service Centre; Sudbury Youth Wellness Hub; Training Learning Centre for Brighter Futures and YMCA of Northeastern Ontario.

The Local 6500 Hospitality, Conference & Education Centre is located at 66 Brady Street in Sudbury.
