Sudbury's popular Kivi Park has initiated a Seniors' Program for 2024 that appears to be drawing in lots of participants.

Sudbury's popular Kivi Park has initiated a Seniors' Program for 2024 that appears to be drawing in lots of participants, say the organizers.

Kivi Park is located off Long Lake Road in Sudbury and includes an extensive network of trails ideal for snowshoeing, hiking and cross-country skiing.

The mild weather has played havoc with some of the available activities this winter, with the ski trails having been closed off and on this winter (they’re currently open) and the skating path currently closed.

But there are still trails for hiking, biking and poling, said the organizers.

Organizers said fat-biking continues to be one of the more popular activities at Kivi Park.

The nicer weather has made it easier for people to get out to enjoy themselves. Organizers have even planned a pre-Valentine "date night" at the park, which includes pizza and a cozy campfire.

That event is scheduled to take place Saturday, February 10. Details are online at the Kivi website.

For as much fun as the seniors can have, Kivi organizers and some sponsors have also put together a Family Day social media photo event, with people invited to post their favourite family pictures. Organizers put the details online.

The free seniors program, designed to enrich the lives of people aged 55 and above, has become a vibrant hub of activity, fostering physical fitness, mental well-being, and social connections, said a news release from Kivi Park.

The program runs every Tuesday and Friday from 1:30 to 3 p.m. until mid-March and has quickly become a cornerstone of Sudbury's seniors' community.

The program's wide array of activities includes guided hikes, skiing, snowshoeing, fat biking, and urban poling, providing ample opportunities for participants to maintain their physical health and mobility, said the release.

One of the program’s key features is its dedication to social interaction. Organizers said that after each session, participants gather around a cozy fire to relax, sip hot beverages, and enjoy delicious snacks, fostering camaraderie and a sense of community.

Some of those involved in the program were pleased to share comments.

"As a senior enjoying seniors day, I wanted to say thanks to Kivi Park for organizing this event where seniors can get out and not only enjoy the wonderful activities but the social time after sipping a hot beverage and enjoying a yummy beverage around the cozy fire," said one person identified as Patsy.

"Great activity. Getting together with old friends and making new ones. Great way to stay healthy," said a participant named Ethel.

This year's program builds upon the success of the program's inaugural year in 2023, which saw close to 500 participants overall. It reflects Kivi Park's commitment to creating a vibrant and inclusive space for seniors to thrive, connect, and enjoy the outdoors.

The success of the Seniors Program 2024 is in part thanks to the generous support of an anonymous donor, who has covered 50 per cent of the program's costs, allowing it to flourish and continue serving Sudbury's seniors.

Kivi Park remains dedicated to its mission of enhancing the well-being of seniors and creating a sense of belonging within the community. As the program continues to grow, it promises more opportunities for seniors to stay active, make lasting friendships, and enjoy the great outdoors.
