Chapter 3 of Reading Town hits Sudbury May 3-13

Tons of events lined up to celebrate literacy

Reading Town has become Canada's largest multilingual literary festival and it's returning to Greater Sudbury for its third edition this spring

Reading Town Sudbury Ville Lecture 2018 is set for May 3-13. This year's festival promises to be the most inclusive and largest literary celebration in Ontario, said festival co-ordinator Derek Young. This year's theme is Reading Rocks the North, with activities for all ages in Greater Sudbury.

“Reading Town is back because Sudbury is a model for what reading looks like in Canada,” Young said following the media launch of the festival on April 25 at Theatre Cambrian. “There's so much diversity in our community through its multiculturalism, its connection to the Anishinabek territory, and our strong Francophone population, to name a few. The end goal is to develop these Reading Town festivals across the country and to encourage reading for pleasure.”

Imagine having a poem delivered with your pizza, reading the same story simultaneously with hundreds of people, hiking along a nature trail with live narration, or watching a theatrical performance to a classic story, all of which encourages literary and artistic practices. Those are one the tip of the iceberg of what's available during the 10-day festival.

“It's a fun celebration of reading across Greater Sudbury,” Young said.
