We still have to get through the June provincial election, but some candidates are already stepping forward to run in the municipal election in October.

Among those to announce their intentions are Mayor Brian Bigger, who is running for reelection, but hasn't filed his candidate papers yet.

“Mayor Brian Bigger is honoured and proud serving as mayor of the City of Greater Sudbury and wishes to confirm he will be running for re-election and will notify the media prior to submitting his nomination papers,” said a release from Bigger's campaign Wednesday.

Other incumbents on city council have filed to run again. Ward 2 Coun. Michael Vagnini, who was rumoured to be considering a run for mayor, registered Wednesday to run for reelection in his Lively-area ward. Other incumbents also running again include Ward 3 Coun. Gerry Montpellier, Ward 5 Coun. Bob Kirwan, Ward 6 Coun. Rene Lapierre, Ward 8 Coun. Al Sizer, Ward 9 Coun. Deb McIntosh and Ward 10 Coun. Fern Cormier.

Among those hoping to win a seat on council are Bob Johnston, who is known for his work at the Blue Door Soup Kitchen. Johnston is running in Ward 1. Musician Geoff McCausland, a passionate opponent of building a new casino in Sudbury, is running in Ward 4, while Leo Frappier has filed to run in Ward 12.

Two people have filed to run for school board trustee:  Raymond Desjardins, in Sudbury Catholic District School Board Zone 2, and Louise Essiembre, in Conseil Scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario Zone 6.

To run, candidates must meet requirements set out in the Municipal Elections Act. Election hopefuls must first file a nomination paper and submit a form with at least 25 signatures from voters who endorse the candidate.

Candidates have until July 27 at 2 p.m. to file. Application forms can be found online at www.greatersudbury.ca/elections.
