Copper Cliff residents advised to close doors and windows due to dust from operations

Vale says it is using water and other dust control measures in the area

Vale is warning residents near Fielding Road and Copper Cliff to stay inside, and close their doors and windows, due to dust from the company's operations entering the community.

In an email to Sudbury.com Angie Robson, Vale's manager of corporate and Aboriginal affairs in Sudbury, said dry and windy conditions Monday afternoon have spread dust from the company's operations around that part of the city.

Robson said with Monday's weather conditions dust from Vale's operations would be mixing with road dust and other sources of dust in the natural environment.

Dust can cause irritation to the eyes and respiratory system. Individuals around Fielding Road or Copper Cliff, especially the elderly, young children and those with respiratory issues such as asthma, should make every effort to stay indoors in these conditions.

In an anonymous tip a Sudbury.com reader reported seeing a “yellow cloud” over Fielding Road, and said some residents have complained of irritation to their eyes due to the dust.

“Vale has all available personnel on site to control the dust to the best of our ability using water and other dust control measures,” Robson said in her email to Sudbury.com.

“Vale will continue to manage the dust in these difficult conditions to the best of our ability,” she added.
