Cambrian College’s information systems are back up and running after being compromised by a computer virus during the afternoon of April 27.

In a written statement, the college said the virus, which is a form of ransomware that encrypts files, included a payment request in the amount of 30 bitcoin, or approximately $54,000.

The college engaged the support of a cyber security firm, who, along with IT staff, worked diligently to assess the impact of the virus and restore a number of the systems that were affected.

“We regret any delays and inconveniences that this situation has caused our students, and in order to minimize the impact on students, we have extended deadlines in order to meet end of semester requirements,” the statement said.

Release of final grades to students is rescheduled to noon on May 6. In addition, registration for the spring semester has been rescheduled and will now open on May 7 at 10 a.m.

Currently, the majority of Cambrian’s systems are operational, although some users may continue to experience some technical difficulties as we work to bring all of our systems and tools back to full functionality, the statement said.

Students are encouraged to contact faculty, visit the myCambrian portal, check the College’s website at www.cambriancollege.ca, or phone 705-566-8101 or 1-800-461-7145 (toll-free) for information.

“We thank our students and staff for their ongoing patience and understanding as we continue to assess the impact of the situation,” the statement said. “Cambrian will provide updates as necessary.”
