A media report says Health Sciences North will be cutting at least 30 management positions, but the Sudbury hospital will neither confirm nor deny the report.

In the wake of the HSN CEO Dominic Giroux announcing that the hospital is in financial trouble, and facing a possible $10-million deficit, it looks as though more employees are being given their walking papers.

On Jan. 12, the hospital cut 30 per cent of its senior managers in a move that was projected to save HSN more than $800,000 in salaries.

During a Sudbury Chamber of Commerce luncheon on Feb. 13, Giroux said that he was looking to get HSN back on track financially and achieving a balanced budget by 2021.

Giroux said that there would be some tough choices to be made in the coming months and beyond, though he didn't elaborate in any great detail as to what the specifics of those choices were and whether or not there were more cuts and restructuring to come.

When asked if these "tough choices" included cutting more jobs, the CEO responded, "not necessarily".

"Our hope is to avoid tough decisions at the hospital and that we'd be able to secure the funding that was contemplated in the provincial budget last year," said Giroux.

Sudbury.com has reached out to HSN for comment on the latest report of 30 jobs being axed. Health Sciences North corporate communications manager Ginette Vezina said that the hospital will not be commenting on the matter right now.
