Improving Durham Street, one bike rack and bench at a time

Improvements to downtown's Durham Street have begun. Bike racks have been installed along the sidewalks, and benches will be introduced this week. When complete, 10 bike racks and 10 benches will line the street.

Improvements to downtown's Durham Street have begun.

Bike racks have been installed along the sidewalks, and benches will be introduced this week. When complete, 10 bike racks and 10 benches will line the street.

Melanie Dionne, communications officer at the Downtown Village Development Corporation, said each bike-shaped bike rack can accommodate up to four bikes.

“You can attach a bike the length of the rack - so you'd have one on either side,” she wrote in an e-mail to Northern Life. “Or you can attach the front wheel to one of the wheels - which would allow for two on either side.”

New lighting is expected to illuminate Durham Street in the near future, too.

The improvements have been spearheaded by the Downtown Partnership, a group consisting of  Downtown Village Development Corporation, Downtown Sudbury and the Greater Sudbury Development Corporation.
