Sudbury has turned the corner and we're officially starting to see the first signs of summer.

The Weather Network released its summer forecast on May 28, and most of Canada will see a warmer summer than last year. The same holds true for Sudbury, but in a somewhat limited capacity.

Over the entirety of the 2018 summer, Sudbury will be very close to its seasonal average, with the early months being slightly warmer than average and the later months being a bit cooler.

"At this point we've made our transition into the summer weather, but this week is going to be very much a microcosm of what summer will be like for Sudbury," said Weather Network meteorologist, Michael Carter.

"It's going to be very warm early in the week, then cool off around Thursday and Friday. That's what the summer is looking like, hot for June and July, cooler in August and September."

Carter says that Sudbury will see more persistent warm weather throughout the early parts of the summer season with a lot of very warm and muggy days.

"It's definitely reasonable to expect it to be a little warmer than normal early on this summer, but not to any extremes," said Carter. "There will be very warm spells, but they won't stick around for extended periods of time."

The Weather Network is projecting average highs of 22 degrees C for June, 25 for July, and 23 for August. The evening lows will be 11, 13.5, and 12.5 for those three months respectively.

As far as precipitation goes, Carter expects close to seasonal averages for rainfalls, but predicting those patterns can be tricky, as summer rains are a lot more localized than winter snowfall.

"In the summer you tend to see more heavy, localized downpours," said Carter. "You could be at home and it's sunny and clear, then you drive 15 minutes to take your kids to a sports field and it's cloudy and raining."

Sudbury won't see many more rainy days that it did last summer, though when the rain does hit, it could be heavier than normal. Overall, Carter expects that the summer will be close to typical, but did mention that Sudburians should take advantage of the warm weather in the early months, as summer will make a quick exit as August starts to wind down.

"There's cooler air that's been hanging around Hudson Bay that we're expecting to move south in the later months of the summer, so we'll start seeing colder than normal temperatures for that time of year," Carter said. "It's going to be very nice early this summer though, so definitely take advantage of it while it's here."
