Mine Mill Local 598/Unifor identified the man killed in Glencore's Nickel Rim South Mine in Sudbury Tuesday as Richard Pigeau.
Glencore's Nickel Rim South Mine in Sudbury remained closed Wednesday morning following his death, the company confirmed.
The Ministry of Labour sent two inspectors to the mine – an electrical and mechanical expert, and an engineer – and has issued an order that Glencore not disturb the site of the incident, confirmed ministry spokesperson Janet Deline.
Deline confirmed Pigeau was underground when he was killed.
Mine Mine Local 598/Unifor president Anne-Marie MacInnis said the union represented Pigeau.
But MacInnis could not provide more details regarding the incident.
In an email, Glencore spokesperson Yonaniko Grenon said the company is co-operating fully with the investigation.
"It is with deepest regret we confirm a fatality underground at our Nickel Rim South Mine this morning," Grenon said in the email. "We have informed the family of the deceased and are extending our full support to the family.”
