Ontario will deploy 100 firefighters and 19 supervisors to help fight the wildfire near Fort McMurray on Friday, reports the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry.

Most of the firefighters headed to Alberta are from Northern Ontario bases, said the ministry.

A wildfire was first reported southwest of Fort McMurray on May 1. By Tuesday, May 3, it had spread rapidly and engulfed large portions of the city.

By Wednesday, 88,000 residents from Fort McMurray and the surrounding area have been evactuated without any severe injuries or casualties.

The fire was reportedly extinguished in the city proper by Wednesday morning, but continues in the surrounding area.
