Queer North Fest to raise funds for Orlando shooting victims

Festival making first feature screening a free event

Sudbury's Queer North Film Festival will collect funds to support the families and victims of the shooting at the Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, Florida, that killed 50 people and injured 53 more over the weekend.

The festival, which will showcase LGBTQ films from around the world, has changed its plans for the June 23 opening night event to make the screening of the movie “Pride” free.

“We're going to pass the hat there for the survivors and the victims of the Pulse massacre,” said Beth Mairs, the festival's director.

Some funds will also be set aside to support Sudbury Pride events. The Nickel City's annual Pride festival runs the week of July 18 to July 24.

“Pride” tells the true story of gay rights activists in London, England, who supported the strike of the National Union of Mineworkers in the summer of 1984.

The screening starts at 6:30 p.m. on June 23 and will be at Sudbury Secondary School, located at 154 College Street.
