A special air quality statement is in effect for Greater Sudbury and vicinity.

Smoke is causing poor air quality and reducing visibility in the area, according to the statement, issued by Environment Canada at around 10 a.m. Wednesday.

There are possible high levels of air pollution due to smoke from forest fires.

Smoke plumes are over parts of the region from forest fires in the vicinity of Key River. Air quality may deteriorate if the smoke descends to ground level. Conditions may improve over the next day or two due to showers.

Individuals may experience symptoms such as increased coughing, throat irritation, headaches or shortness of breath. Children, seniors, and those with cardiovascular or lung disease, such as asthma, are especially at risk.

Visit www.airhealth.ca for information on how to reduce your health risk and your personal contribution to pollution levels, as well as for current and forecast AQHI values.
