Sudbury's finest honoured at Police Gala

Eleven awards handed out to police officers and community members

The Greater Sudbury Police Service hosted their fourth annual community and police awards gala at the Caruso Club on May 17 in conjunction with Police Week, which is being observed in Sudbury and across the province.

This year's awards ceremony featured a total of 11 awards being handed out to police officers and members of the community who have gone above and beyond in the last year to make the Greater Sudbury community a safer one.

This year's winners are as follows:

Heroic Action Award
This award is presented to a member of the Service and/or citizen for distinguished acts of heroism.
Winner: Constable Enzo Rizzi

Meritorious Action Award
This award recognizes members of the Police Service for exceptional performance of duty, community policing initiatives, or innovative initiatives that enhance the image or operation of the Service.
Winner: Sergeant Joann Whitten

Police Assistance Award
This award is presented to a citizen of Greater Sudbury to recognize the unselfish assistance rendered to aid another person.
Winner: Robert Lalonde

Teamwork Commendation Award
This award is presented to a Branch or a team of Police Service members to recognize their exceptional collaboration on a project or event that had a posi-tive impact on the image of the efficiency or effectiveness of the Police Service. 
Winner: Tactical Unit and Drug Enforcement Unit

Police - Community Leader Award
This award is presented to a leader in the City of Greater Sudbury in recognition of unselfish assistance provided to the Police Service or for an initiative or innovation that had a positive impact on the image or the efficiency or effectiveness of the Police Service. 
Winner: Ronald Roy

Police - Community Partnership Award
This award is presented to community organizations in Greater Sudbury who work in partnership with the Police Service to recognize initiatives and/or innovations that had a positive impact on the image or operation of the Police Service.
Winner: Sudbury & Area Victim Services

City of Greater Sudbury Partnership Award
This award is presented to an individual or department of the City of Greater Sudbury in recognition of a City partner who has contributed in an extraordinary way to the Police Service.
Winner: Health Promotion Community Paramedic Program

Sergeant Richard McDonald Memorial Award
This award is presented annually to a Police Service member in recognition of their enthusiasm and positive attitude that promotes a culture that significantly motivates Police Service members, fosters team spirit, and supports the Police Service’s Shared Commitment to Community Safety and Well-being.
Winner: Heather Lewis

Constable Joseph MacDonald Memorial Award
This award is presented annually to a Police Service member who has demonstrated outstanding service to youth through official duty or through community involvement, or both.
Winner:Special Constable Albert Pileggi

Nicole Bélair Service Above-Self Award 
This award is presented annually to a citizen who has distinguished themselves by an act of personal courage, community service, or service above-self. 
Winner: Steve Blondin

Chief’s Honorary Distinction Award
The Chief’s Honorary Distinction Award is reserved to celebrate the commitment, dedication, and service in recognition of member(s) who are distinguished by their significant contribution(s) and dedication to protecting the community above the call of duty, and whose excellence and distinction reflect positively on policing and public safety.
Winner: Constable Shannon Agowissa & Lisa Osawamick
