Synchro swimmers carry the torch in fight against breast cancer

Sudbury club has raised nearly $80,000 in 13 years

For the 13th year in a row, members of the Sudbury Synchro Swim Club took to the Laurentian University pool to take part in Burning Bright, a relay to raise money for breast cancer.

Swimmers took turns swimming the width of the pool, passing lit candles to one another for an hour. All of the team members canvassed their neighbourhoods in the weeks leading up to the event to raise money in the fight against the disease.

The event is in its 13th year across the province, and Sudbury Synchro Swim Club has been involved since the inaugural Burning Bright.

Chelsea Wandziak, a senior coach with Sudbury Synchro, has been with the club for 17 years and has been a part of all 13 relays.

"I'm honoured to be standing here today, Sudbury Synchro has been part of this Ontario-wide event since its inception 13 years ago," said Wandziak. "It began as a simple idea of passing a candle in a pool to raise funds for breast cancer and over the past 13 years it's grown into a tremendous, heartwarming event."

To date, the event has raised more than $405,000 and Sudbury's club has played a big role in that, raising nearly $80,000.

"We've raised a tremendous amount of money for such a small club here in Sudbury," said Wandziak.
