Vehicles catch fire following collision

One person is dead following a crash between a vehicle and a tractor trailer on June 17 west of North Bay on Highway 17.

The crash caused the vehicles to catch fire. The driver of the westbound vehicle was found dead in the burned vehicle and has not been identified. The driver of the eastbound tractor trailer was able to escape the fire and suffered minor injuries.

Members of the North Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) along with North Bay Fire Department and the North Bay Ambulance Service responded to the crash at about 1:08 p.m.

The OPP's Technical Traffic Collision Investigators (TTCI) and the Office of the Chief Coroner- Ontario Forensic Pathology Service (OCC-FPS) are assisting with this investigation.

Highway 17 was closed for the time of the investigation and has since re-opened.

Highway 17 was fully reopened between Highway 64 and Highway 11 at around 9:30 p.m. Sunday night following the collision described below.

Flames were visible after a collision occurred on Highway 17 Sunday afternoon between North Bay and Sturgeon Falls.   

OPP are reporting the accident occurred between Mosquito Creek Road and Landfill Site Road, which one witness says is west of Eagles Nest Gas Bar.  

Flames were visible along with heavy smoke in the collision which involved a transport and another smaller vehicle.  

OPP say a detour is available at Highway 11 to Highway 64.   

No word on any injuries at this time.
