Police set up near Fairbank Provincial Park — where a command centre has been set up — indicate the search is taking place near Hiram Hixon Island. Our reporter is attempting to travel to the scene, so stay tuned.

A 60-year-old man who was the pilot of a float plane that crashed on Fairbank Lake last night is missing.

A 32-year-old man who was a passenger in the plane was rescued after the incident, which took place at around 8 p.m. Sept. 21. He sustained minor injuries, and was taken to hospital and released.

The plane is believed to be resting at the bottom of the lake in around 130 feet of water.

Greater Sudbury Police Services Marine Unit and Search Team, assisted by the Search and Rescue Team from CFB Trenton, are searching for the pilot. CFB Trenton have dispatched a C-130 Hercules and a helicopter to the scene.

Transport Canada investigators and members of the OPP Underwater Recovery Unit will be assisting with the investigation and search this morning.

A float plane crashed landed on Fairbank Lake, northwest of Whitefish, at around 8 p.m. Wednesday night, Greater Sudbury Police have reported.

Police said they were still at the scene at around 10:20 p.m.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing.

Police have not reported whether anyone was injured in the crash.
