OPP nab drugged driver on Hwy. 17 on New Year’s Eve

A 30-year-old man from Warren was arrested New Year’s Eve after allegedly driving while under the influence of drugs on Highway 17 in Greater Sudbury.

The Nipissing West OPP say they received the complaint about a possible impaired driver just before 11 p.m. Dec. 31. 

Officers subsequently located and stopped the vehicle. 

Police say their investigation revealed the driver was under the influence of a drug, and was arrested. A small quantity of drugs suspected to be cocaine were seized.

The driver was transported to the North Bay OPP Detachment for further testing by a Drug Recognition Expert (DRE).

As a result, the driver was arrested and charged with:

  • Operation While Impaired - Alcohol and Drugs, contrary to section 320.14(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC);
  • Driving while under suspension, contrary to section 53(1.1) of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA);
  • Drive motor vehicle - not equipped with ignition interlock device, contrary to section 11of Highway Traffic Act (HTA) O. Reg 287/08; and
  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance- Other Drugs, contrary to section 4(1) Controlled Drugs and Substance Act (CDSA)

The accused was released on an Undertaking and is scheduled to appear in Sudbury court Feb. 24.

He was also issued a 90-day Administrative Driver's Licence Suspension (ADLS) and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.

This incident marks the 79th driver charged under the criminal impaired driving laws in the Nipissing West Detachment area in 2020 and the 14th during this year's Festive RIDE.
