Sturgeon Falls assaults — including baseball bat attack — result in charges against 3 people

Three Sturgeon Falls residents have been charged after an Aug. 31 series of events that at one point included an assault with baseball bats.

The Nipissing West OPP received the report of two people fighting with baseball bats on Cache Bay Road in Sturgeon Falls. An off-duty officer was on scene, attempting to intervene.

An investigation revealed that an altercation had ensued at a residence on Cache Bay Road, where one person was assaulted and the suspect left the scene on foot.

The suspect was subsequently confronted down the road and assaulted by two other individuals.

The victim from the assault at the residence was transported to hospital by ambulance and suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries. The other victim was taken to hospital and treated for minor injuries.

As a result of the investigation, three people from Sturgeon Falls were arrested and charged.

A 44-year-old man has been charged with:

  • Assault Causing Bodily Harm, contrary to section 267(b) of the Criminal Code (CC).

A 24-year-old man was charged with:

  • Assault with a Weapon, contrary to section 267(a) of the CC;
  • Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose, contrary to section 88 of the CC; and
  • Assault, contrary to section 266 of the CC.

A 24-year-old woman was charged with:

  • Assault, contrary to section 266 of the CC;
  • Dangerous Operation, contrary to section 320.13(1) of the CC; and
  • Driving While Under Suspension, contrary to section 53(1) of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA).

The OPP also put out a separate press release, saying the same 24-year-old woman mentioned above is also accused of a break, enter and theft from a Cache Bay Road residence. 

The break-in was reported at 9:10 p.m. Aug. 31, the same day as the assaults.

The 24-year-old woman also stands accused of:

  • Break, Enter a Dwelling House with Intent to Commit Indictable Offence, contrary to section 348(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC)

All three accused were released on an undertaking, and are scheduled to appear in court in Sturgeon Falls Nov. 5.
