Marc Long’s 50 hour of work and 4,200 gallons of water truly paid off this winter.

His outdoor rink in Astorville was the winner of the Home Depot Backyard Rink Contest.  His 24 x 45 rink beat out dozens of outdoor rink entries in the fourth annual contest.

Long, who is a well-known minor hockey coach and former OHL player himself, will have a handful of Battalion players come to his rink on Family Day between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. as part of the reward for winning the contest.

“The kids are very excited. Thanks to whoever nominated me for the best back yard rink,” said Long, who has three sons in minor hockey.

“This year I wanted to go bigger so I had to move the rink.  It took me about 50 hours to try and get it level and put boards up.”

Expect to see that Battalion Family Day game of Shinny featured on a future edition of Troops Tracks.
