Double fatality in South River train collision

Two people from the truck have been confirmed deceased as a result of the collision

SOUTH RIVER — Emergency personnel were still on the scene late Monday after a horrific collision between a pickup truck and a train in South River earlier in the day.

On October 14 at 10 a.m. police were called to the accident on Machar-Strong Boundary Road in South River, Machar Township.

"Two people from the truck have been confirmed deceased as a result of the collision," says Constable Shona Camirand. "Identifying information is being withheld pending next of kin notifications."

The road was expected to be closed for several hours while OPP Technical Collision Investigators conduct an analysis of the scene. Canadian National Police Service is assisting with the investigation.

The Almaguin Highlands Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police, South River Machar Fire Department and Sundridge-Strong Volunteer Fire Department all responded to the collision.

Joly Strong Rd between Airport Rd and Hwy 124 remained closed as of yesterday.

A detour is available. There are no residences affected by the road closure.
