THUNDER BAY — Ontario Provincial Police have laid a charge against the motorist involved in a collision on Lakeshore Drive in Shuniah Township.
A 50-year-old Thunder Bay man is charged under the Criminal Code with operating a motor vehicle with over 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millimetres of blood in his system.
OPP said the driver escaped injury Tuesday afternoon when his pickup truck struck a Hydro One transmission tower near the intersection of Lakeshore Drive and McKenzie Heights Road.
The truck ended up on its roof, and the tower was knocked to the ground.
Hydro One said it would replace the metal lattice tower with a temporary wooden pole structure.
Spokesperson Tiziana Baccega Rosa said a crew was expected to erect an H-shaped wooden structure by the end of the day on Wednesday.
Baccega Rosa said power was rerouted after Tuesday's collision.
She said the lines were carrying "a very small amount of load, so there were no issues there, and there were no customers being supplied through that line."
According to Baccega Rosa, in these kinds of cases, the utility company will go through a motorist's insurance company to try to recoup the cost of repairs.
