Timmins Police lay first-degree murder charge

The Timmins Police Service – Criminal Investigation Division (CID) has laid a charge of First Degree Murder against a 19-year-old male Timmins resident. 

The charge stems from the Timmins Police investigation into the death of Austin Theriault, 19, of Timmins, whose deceased body was located in the area of Bozzer Park on the morning of July 13.

A comprehensive criminal investigation involving Timmins Police front line officers, Forensic Identification, and Criminal Investigation Division officers led to the arrest of the accused late yesterday evening (13 July).

Nathan Koostachin, 19, of Timmins, is charged with one count of First Degree Murder contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada.

He was remanded into custody today at a hearing at the Provincial Court in Timmins.

The cause of death is not being disclosed at this time as it is part of the ongoing investigation. 

Next-of-kin notifications were completed by the Timmins Police Service.

The Timmins Police Service has enlisted the assistance of its Victim’s Services Section to offer support resources to the surviving members of the victim’s family.

The crime scene remains under the control of the Timmins Police Service and public access continues to be denied for the time being but is expected to be released in a matter of hours. 

The Timmins Police Service appreciates the continued cooperation of residents in that area respecting the perimeter set up around the crime scene.
