Canadians, tourists and businesses benefit from safe and well-maintained regional airports.
From visiting friends and family, to traveling to medical appointments, to getting goods to market, we rely on our local airports to support vibrant and sustainable communities.
Regional airports also provide essential air services including community resupply, air ambulance, search and rescue and forest fire response.
The Honourable Marc Garneau, Minister of Transport and Terry Sheehan, Member of Parliament for Sault Ste. Marie, today highlighted an investment of $360,868 for the rehabilitation of essential airside electrical power systems at the Sault Ste. Marie Airport.
Funding is provided through Transport Canada's Airports Capital Assistance Program (ACAP).
Since the Program's launch in 1995, the Sault Ste. Marie Airport has received over $9.1 million for 19 safety projects including the replacement of a fire truck; the modification to the combined service building to accommodate fire trucks; the rehabilitation of Runway 12-30, Taxiways B, F, G and Subdrains; and the replacement of a snowplow truck, runway sweeper, snowblower and sand storage building.
To date, the Government of Canada has invested more than $736 million for 848 projects at 179 airports across the country through ACAP.
"The Sault Ste. Marie Airport is an important hub for the movement of goods and people in this region. This project will help ensure continued safe airport operation for passengers, flight crews and employees, while contributing to the economic and social well-being of the local community," said Sheehan.
