A workplace tragedy has claimed the life of a former Saultite.

Tim McLean died in a workplace accident, say media sources, when a steel transmission tower collapsed and killed him and co-worker Jared Moffat on Monday near Come by Chance, N.L., just over 100 km west of St. John’s.

Moffat and McLean both worked for the power line construction group Forbes Ltd., said news reports.

McLean’s Facebook page states that he lives in Nipigon, Ont. and that he is from Sault Ste. Marie.

A friend and co-worker of McLean set up a GoFundMe page to benefit McLean's family and, as of late Friday evening, the page had raised over $18,000 of its stated $25,000 goal.

The page left the following message:

This page was created to help out with any costs of the passing of Tim, anything you can donate will help his family in this time of need. Tim was the happiest, most loving person I've ever had the chance to meet! Family, friends and co-workers never had a border, we were all family. As one of my brothers I'd never want his family to suffer over his passing, we look out for one, we look out for all! We miss you buddy!
