Glad we're not in Thunder Bay today: Freezing rain closes all schools

Decision will affect at least two daycare facilities too, as well as Lakehead University and Confederation College, which have also closed their doors for the day.

While Greater Sudbury enjoys a warm — if cloudy and rainy — day, things aren't so spring-like in Ontario's northwest on this Wednesday.

Icy conditions after a night of freezing rain has led all local school boards to shut their facilities for the day and cancel all bus routes.

The Thunder Bay Christian School is also closed on Wednesday because of the weather, a decision mirrored by officials at Lakehead University and Confederation College who have also decided to shut their schools' doors for the day, citing inclement weather and poor traveling conditions.

A bulletin issued by the college says the cafeteria will remain open for students, but all other non-essential personnel have been advised to stay home. Students on work placements are being advised to check with their employer to determine whether or not the workplace is open, while students in the region are being asked to check with their local campus to determine the satellite campus' status.

The school closures will have a trickle-down effect on some local daycares.

Woodcrest and Odgen Lake child care centres will be closed as a result of the decision, although a city spokesperson said Algoma Child Care Centre and Grace Remus Child Care Centre will remain open.
