THUNDER BAY – Health Canada has issued a warning after counterfeit hand sanitizer was discovered for sale at a Thunder Bay Dollarama store.
"As the counterfeit version of Daily Shield hand sanitizer is unauthorized and made with an unknown formulation, it may not be effective at killing bacteria and viruses, and may pose serious risks to health," the agency said in a statement issued Sunday.
The counterfeit version is sold in a 250 millilitre format, labelled with NPN 80098979, Lot 6942, with a listed expiry of May 2023.
Anyone who purchased the product is urged to stop using it immediately, and consult a health care provider if they have used the product and have any health or safety concerns.
Dollarama has agreed to stop the sale of Daily Shield hand sanitizer at locations across the country as Health Canada investigates.
The counterfeit product is suspected to contain methanol, the agency said, which is not authorized for use in hand sanitizers and can cause severe reactions if ingested.
