SAULT STE. MARIE — Human remains located on St. Joseph Island last month have been identified as those of 74-year-old Sally Gibson of Sault Ste. Marie.
Gibson was reported missing by her family on Aug. 18. She had left her St. Joseph Island cottage to travel to Manitoba on Aug. 14, and had not been seen or heard from since.
According to a news release issued by the the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), the discovery was made on Aug. 25 on a logging road in the area of S Line in Hilton Township.
OPP Constable Bev Gauthier told SooToday that officers discovered the remains after responding to a report regarding an abandoned vehicle described as a four-door car, brown in colour.
A post-mortem examination took place in Toronto on Monday.
The investigation is ongoing with the assistance of the East Algoma OPP Crime Unit, the Office of the Chief Coroner for Ontario, and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service.
The investigation continues.
