KENORA, Ont. — A justice of the peace has handed a Missouri man $5,500 in fines for three hunting offences under the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act.

One of the charges he faced was for abandoning a black bear and allowing its flesh to spoil. The others were for hunting without a licence and for making a false statement to a conservation officer.

According to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, the man lied to the officer who investigated an incident near Highway 105, south of Perrault Falls, in August 2017.

The hunter had shot a male bear after shooting a small female bear a day or two earlier.

Court was told he abandoned the carcass of the female in search of a larger, more impressive trophy.

The man was only licensed to harvest one bear.

He pleaded guilty to all three charges, and in addition to the fines was banned from hunting in Ontario for three years.
