The first Grand Slam of Curling event of 2018 is underway for Brad Jacobs and his team from the Community First Curling Centre in Sault Ste. Marie.

The team is in Camrose, Alta. this week competing in the Canadian Open, the fourth event on the Grand Slam of Curling schedule.

On Wednesday, Team Jacobs, which includes third Ryan Fry, second E.J. Harnden and lead Ryan Harnden picked up a 7-3 victory over Mike McEwen of Winnipeg in seven ends in the evening draw to improve to 2-0 at the six-day event.

Tied at two through four ends, Jacobs would score three in the fifth before adding on two more in the seventh to seal the win.

The win means the Jacobs rink will face Peter De Cruz, of Switzerland, who is also 2-0 after wins over Brad Gushue of St. John’s and Norway’s Thomas Ulsrud.

The Jacobs rink opened the event on Tuesday night with a 7-3 win in seven ends over Rui Liu of China.

Trailing 2-1 through four ends, Jacobs would score three to take the lead in the fifth end before sealing the win with three more in the seventh end.

A triple knockout event, the Canadian Open features 16 men’s and 16 women’s teams.

All 16 teams on each side begin tournament play in the A bracket. Winning allows teams to remain in the A bracket while the losing teams drops to the B bracket. A second loss drops teams to the C bracket and a third loss eliminates teams from the tournament.

The A bracket sends two teams to the playoff round with 3-0 records while three B teams advance (3-1) and three more C teams also advance (3-2).

Playoff round action begins with the women’s quarter-finals on Sunday morning and the men’s quarter’s to follow at 2 p.m. Semifinal action is Saturday evening and the championship games are Sunday.
