Man accused of disposing of infant's body in St. Mary's River

A post-mortem is to be conducted

A 34-year-old Sault Ste. Marie man is accused of disposing the body of a deceased infant in the St. Mary's River in Sault Ste. Marie.

Sault Police arrested James Joseph (J.J.) Hache after two incidents July 6.

At around 12:45 p.m., officers responded to a call about what appeared to be human remains found on the waterfront near the old Plummer Hospital property at 969 Queen Street.

The remains have been identified as the body of a deceased infant. It's alleged that Hache disposed of the child's body in the St. Mary's River.

Then, just before 6 p.m. July 6, Sault Police were called out to an incident involving a man barricaded in a room with a firearm at a Queen Street East residence.

It is alleged that Hache had possession of the firearm while he is prohibited from possessing weapons.

He has been charged with the following offences:

  • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
  • Possession of a weapon while prohibited under the Criminal Code of Canada
  • One count of concealing the body of a child

Hache is expected to appear in bail court today (Friday). A post-mortem will be conducted on the infant's remains.

Sault Police says that as this is an ongoing major case investigation, no further information will be released at this time.
