NORTH BAY - The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating after a North Bay Police officer shot a 34-year-old man early Sunday morning.

The SIU says in a news release that at approximately 4:42 a.m. on January 30 officers encountered the man in front of a house on Fraser Street. The man had a knife.

There was an interaction between the officers and the man.

"An officer discharged his firearm and struck the man. The man fled the scene and the officers gave chase," says the SIU.

Officers chased the man a short distance where he was arrested on Chippewa Street West.

After his arrest, police provided first aid until paramedics arrived and he was taken to hospital where he is being treated for serious injuries.

"In relation to the interaction, an officer attended hospital and was treated for an injury," adds the release.

Three investigators and one forensic investigator have been assigned to the case.

The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about this investigation, including video or photos, to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529 or online at: https://siu.on.ca/en/appeals.php

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of police officers that may have resulted in serious injury and the discharge of a firearm at a person.

The SIU decides whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
