INTERNATIONAL FALLS, Minn. -- A Manitoba man made his presence known on American soil after driving the wrong way through the International Falls checkpoint.

The incident happened Friday afternoon when U.S. Customers and Border Protection officers stationed at the International Falls port of entry observed a blue pickup truck travelling south from Fort Frances on the Canadian side heading into oncoming traffic in the northbound lane.

The driver was stopped about a kilometre south of the border in downtown International Falls. He was taken into custody by the International Falls police for driving under the influence.

The 58-year-old man, whose vehicle was seized, was also hit with a civil penalty for failing to stop at the border crossing and presenting the vehicle and all persons and merchandise for inspection.

Penalties for travelling through the border include a fine of at least $5,000 and up to $10,000 may be levied, the vehicle may be seized, and individuals may also face criminal prosecution.
