NORTH BAY — If you get a message from Nipissing-Timiskaming MP Anthony Rota via Facebook, it may not be from him or his office.

That's because MP Anthony Rota's office has become a target of scammers who have been impersonating MPs by creating Facebook Messenger accounts.

"We have become a recent target of this scam and have notified Facebook and House of Commons Security," Rota said via Twitter Monday.

Rota added via Twitter, that his office does not initiate conversations with constituents or any Facebook users via Facebook Messenger.

Things to look for on scam messenger accounts include the words "using Messenger without Facebook" or "Account was created recently".
