No injuries in Temiscaming fire that destroyed eight homes

The fire broke out just before noon Sunday on Anvik Street destroying eight homes

TEMISCAMING — Temiscaming Fire Chief Pierre Bélanger says no serious injuries have been reported in a massive fire Sunday that destroyed eight houses, (two fourplexes) in the picturesque town 40 minutes northeast of North Bay. One minor injury was reported.

The fire broke out just before noon Sunday on Anvik Street destroying eight homes.

Temiscaming, Ville-Marie and Kebaowek fire departments all responded and by Sunday afternoon 40 firefighters were battling the blaze.

Fire victims were taken to Le Centre, a sports complex on Humphrey Street. In addition to the homes lost, another dozen houses were evacuated.

A small number of residents were taken to a nearby health centre for smoke inhalation.

Chief Belanger says the homes on Anvik St. are closely bunched together and are all over 80 years old.

A call has now gone out for clothing, and personal products to assist fire victims. A watering ban and boil water advisory were put in place because of the fire.

The cause of the blaze is still unknown but it's believed it may be careless smoking.

Firefighters are being called heroes by townfolk.

"Thank you, to those who put themselves on the line for our safety! Proud of you all!," wrote Fern Leblanc.

"Thank you for your dedication and service to our community!, said Patsy Pigeon.
