It appears that New Democrat MP Charlie Angus is getting close to a run for the federal leadership.

Last month he stepped aside as his party's caucus chair and indigenous affairs critic in advance of a potential leadership bid.

The 54-year-old northern Ontario MP told supporters via Facebook this weekend, "I haven't asked folks to donate to my team this year because I am considering a run at the leadership. Making a run for national leader is a massive commitment and I need to know I have the financial resources to pull this off. Such a decision will come early in the new year. You can send me messages if you want to pledge your support.

Angus is considering entering the race to replace Tom Mulcair at the helm of the NDP, a contest that doesn't come to a vote until October 2017.
