An Ontario College of Teachers hearing is scheduled this week for a District School Board Ontario North East (DSB1) teacher accused of having sex with a student.

The Discipline Committee of the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) hearing notice alleges Maija Lynn Nuhn is guilty of professional misconduct.

The notice does not state where she was working at the time of the allegations. DSB1 has a large coverage area that includes the area from Timmins to New Liskeard to Hearst.

"Student safety is our main priority.  After a confidential internal investigation, DSB1 referred this matter to the Ontario College of Teachers," said DSB1 in a statement provided to TimminsToday.

In or around January 2019, the hearing notice says Nuhn engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a male student. They communicated on Facebook and Snapchat, and she purchased gifts for him, including alcohol, shoes and clothing. During the same time period, the hearing notice says she kissed, touched and/or fondled and performed oral sex on the student.

Jan. 23, 2019, it's alleged Nuhn and the student had sex.

The disciplinary hearing is taking place electronically on Oct. 21, 2021.

Among the professional misconduct items that Nuhn is accused of are: abusing a student or students psychologically or emotionally, abusing a student or students sexually and/or engaging in sexual abuse of a student or students, committing acts that "would reasonably be regarded by members as disgraceful, dishonourable or unprofessional", and engaging in conduct unbecoming of a member.

The OCT website indicates her certificate of qualification and registration in May 2007.

"On June 18, 2019, the member undertook that she will not seek or engage in any employment for which a Certificate of Qualification and Registration is required, until the College disposes of the complaint against her. At the present time, there has been no finding made against the member," reads a notation on Nuhn's member page.

The disciplinary hearing details are available here.
