Barrie Police say charges are pending against a patient after a nurse was assaulted at Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre.
Police were called to the hospital at 2:19 a.m. Wednesday for an assault.
"It involved a patient in the emergency department," said Const. Nicole Rodgers.
Rodgers said the patient was taken to RVH by Barrie Police July 17 and was at the hospital under a Form 1 Mental Health Act apprehension.
The incident is still being investigated, Rodgers added, and charges are pending against a 23-year-old patient who is a man from Barrie.
She could not confirm the extent of injuries to the nurse at this time.
RVH President and CEO Janice Skot released a statement on the incident.
“At Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre safety - whether as a patient, staff, physician, volunteer or student – is our top priority,” said Skot. “While we can’t comment on the specifics of the incident due to patient and staff privacy and the fact it is under police investigation, what we can share is we are taking this matter very seriously and a full investigation is underway. RVH has a very robust Workplace Violence and Harassment policy and program in place and if in our review we find ways to further enhance safety we will implement these changes swiftly.”
Barrie Police hope to release information about the charges and the nurse's condition Friday.
