Police have seized $12-million worth of cannabis plants after a grow op in Chapleau was busted yesterday afternoon.

A news release issued today by the North East Region Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) states that five individuals, all from the Greater Toronto area, have been charged as a result.

Just after 1 p.m. on May 19, officers with the North East Region OPP's Community Street Crime Unit executed a search warrant at a property on Martel Road in Chapleau.

Police said the search of the premises revealed an extensive cannabis grow operation of more than 12,000 plants in various stages of growth. The plants were seized, along with lighting and electrical equipment.

The estimated street value of the plants is $12 million, the OPP said.

Five people, aged 21, 22, 53, 33 and 35, were arrested and charged with cultivating, propagating or harvesting cannabis plants not at their personal dwelling.

The five people will appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on July 5 in Chapleau.
