OPP are concerned about a spike in motorcycle deaths this month during Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month.

All four deaths this year on OPP patrolled roads occurred in the month of May.

"OPP investigations into the collisions revealed that in separate incidents, two of the four motorcyclists who died were driving properly at the time of the collision," according to a police release."The incidents mark the latest reminder that even safe motorcyclists are vulnerable when sharing the road with other vehicles and that motor vehicle drivers play an important role in motorcycle safety."

The other two separate incidents involved excessive speed, which has been one of the top contributing factors in motorcyclist fatalities over the past 10 years.

In support of Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month the OPP is reminding motorcyclists to watch their speed, drive alcohol- and drug-free, and make themselves as visible as possible to other drivers.

Wear brightly coloured clothing and helmet. This will help make you more visible during the day, especially from angles where your headlight cannot be seen. Yellow, orange, red and other bright colours are highly visible. Black and dark colours are not. Think about wearing a reflective vest, especially at night. Consider adding reflective tape to your helmet, clothing and vehicle. In the rain, wear reflective rainwear.

Police ask motorists to be alert. Motorcycles are smaller and harder to see than other vehicles you share the road with.

Check your blind spots: It’s hard enough to see cars and other vehicles when looking in your mirrors, always shoulder check before making a turn or changing lanes.
