First North Bay Scouts were busy building the future over the weekend and won first place for their Star Wars theme costume while on Manitoulin Island as part of the annual rendezvous at Gordon Park.

The theme was "building the future,” as more than 200 scouts from across Northern Ontario took part in the Scouts event which by night scouts viewed Jupiter and Mars and by day the Scouts showed off costumes made of recycled materials and duct tape.

The fun weekend also included camping, activity stations as well as the dark sky star gazing.

The North Bay Scouts were led by the infamous Highland Scot Angus Simpson in full tartan colours and bag pipes.

"It was such an honour to be invited to this camp,” said social services board CAO Joe Bradbury.

"Scouts remains one of few places where kids get to be kids without the distractions of electronics."
