It’s the latest chapter in the history of the landmark Windsor Park Hotel building in the Sault’s downtown core.

A group of private investors has bought the building, which will serve as a residence for high school-age students of Prolific Prep North (a private school combining academics and athletics), said Nadine Robinson, spokesperson for The TECH.

Prolific Prep North is a tenant of The TECH, a multi-use facility located in the former St. Marys College on Wellington Street East.

“It’s being referred to as Prolific Prep North at The Tech because Prolific Prep is a school in California known for elite basketball training and we’re becoming their sister school in Canada,” Robinson told SooToday.

“The goal of this school is you don’t have to forsake academics for athletics, or vice versa, that it’s really about excellence in both areas,” Robinson said.

“The expectation is to begin classes (in September) with 30 to 35 students, and the plan is it (the Windsor Park building) will be ready for the students as they arrive,” Robinson said.

The investors took possession of the building August 22, Robinson said.

“They haven’t disclosed that information,” said Robinson, when asked what the private investors paid for the Windsor Park.

The Windsor Park’s previous owner was Toronto-based Yau Developments, which planned to turn the building into a retirement residence after purchasing it from Algoma University for $825,000 in August, 2015.

Algoma University has been operating the building as a residence for its students since 2010.

Previously, Dr. Lou Lukenda donated the Windsor Park to Algoma after operating it as a retirement residence since 1996.

The Windsor Park building, once known as the Windsor Hotel, is more than a century old.
