TERRACE BAY — Diners had to be evacuated from a Northern Ontario restaurant on Wednesday after a black bear and her two cubs wandered into the kitchen.

Employees of the Terrace Bay, Ont. restaurant were able to close an inside door, preventing the bears from entering the customer area of the restaurant, and allowing patrons to safely flee, says Schreiber Ontario Provincial Police.

The bears had entered via a rear door, say OPP.

The mother bear was put down by police, but Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry bear technicians were able to trap the cubs and relocated them to a bear sanctuary.

OPP are reminding the public to take precautions to prevent attracting bears, which are known to have opportunistic food habits as they have only a short time to find as much food as possible before hibernation.
