Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 49-year-old man yesterday in Bonfield.
According to the information provided by the OPP, on Dec. 15 police stopped a vehicle near Highway 17 and Route 531. For reasons not provided, police arrested the driver and put him in the back of a cruiser.
Police say "a short time later" he was placed in the cruiser, he went into medical distress and paramedics were called. Shortly after that call was made, police say the man's vital signs stopped and he was pronounced dead at 4:15 p.m.
The OPP Special Investigations Unit has assigned two investigators and one forensic investigator to look into the incident. The SIU is also urging anyone with any information about the incident to call the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529.
The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police when there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
