Teens' stunt on Lake Nipissing ice draws first responders in water rescue gear

A 911 call drew a heavy response from the City's first responders. Teens on thin ice.

NORTH BAY — Three teens and a dog played a very dangerous game Friday afternoon by walking 300 metres offshore onto deteriorating ice on Lake Nipissing.

A 911 call drew a heavy response from the City's first responders including police, EMS and firefighters. Fears mounted that the teens would fall through the weakened ice and have to be rescued. Firefighters wore cold water rescue gear ready for quick action if needed.

Water depth at that part of the lake is about five metres. (16 ft)

The incident happened off a rocky point at 4:30 p.m. just off Sunset Park.

The teens made it back safely after being called by police onshore.

The ice on Lake Nipissing is weakened by numerous cracks and much has already washed up onshore making walking on the surface extremely dangerous, especially that far offshore.
