A 43-year-old man is dead after being shot by OPP officers in Temiskaming Shores last night.

Now, the province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting.

The SIU says preliminary information suggests that at approximately 9 p.m. on April 9, OPP officers responded to a home in the area of Lakeshore Road North and Wedgewood Avenue after receiving a call about an unwanted man at the house who refused to leave.

Soon after officers entered, they found the man who confronted them with a gun. The SIU says, "There was an interaction between the man and the officers. Two officers discharged their firearms, and the man was struck multiple times."

He was rushed to hospital where he died of his injuries. Police say he was a resident of Temiskaming Shores.

Temiskaming OPP is calling it "a break and enter in progress."

Three investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case. Two subject officers and four witness officers have been designated. The post-mortem will be conducted tomorrow  (Saturday) morning in Toronto.

The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about this investigation to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529. The Unit is also urging anyone who may have any video evidence related to this incident to upload that video through the SIU website.

The investigation is continuing by the Temiskaming OPP Crime Unit under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch.
