When it comes to crime, the Timmins Police Service is encouraging people to contact them before taking to social media.

At the recent police services board meeting, members talked about people sometimes taking to social media to share information about crimes.

Chief John Gauthier said people should report it to police first.

“Then if you feel the need to share it with your neighbours and friends, that’s totally understandable and I get it. With technology advances being what they are it just allows for that message to get out quicker, but certainly the first call should be made to the police service if you want to report it,” he said.

He understands that people are frustrated when items are stolen from their yards.

“Allow the police to do their work, don’t take the law into your own hands and certainly we would be more than happy to help,” he said.

Mayor Steve Black, who is also the police services board chair, said calling police also ensures there are statistics so they can respond to problem areas if needed.
