Strange as it may seem, a 33-year-old Timmins woman has been charged with pretending to practice witchcraft and fortune telling — yes, that's actually a criminal offence.

While completing an investigation into a criminal matter, a Timmins Police Service investigator became aware of an alleged offence, a press release said.

It is alleged that the woman, who uses an alias and is a self-proclaimed spiritualist, medium, and clairvoyant, attempted to elicit funds from a Timmins resident in return for protection from some form of potential danger likely to occur to her family.

After an investigation, the woman was charged with pretending to practice witchcraft - fortune telling contrary to section 365(b) of the Criminal Code of Canada.

She is due to appear in court in Timmins Jan. 22 to answer to the charge.

“The Timmins Police Service remind all citizens to be wary of extravagant claims of impending danger made by any person or persons who claim to have clairvoyant or mystical powers and who will apply such powers or skills in return for financial compensations,” said a press release.
