Three local residents are facing charges for not following COVID-19 protocol.

While doing general traffic patrols Saturday afternoon, Timmins Police stopped a vehicle on Gold Mine Road after the officer recognized a possibly suspended driver.

There were three people in the vehicle and none were from the same address and each person was in violation of the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act (EMCPA), according to police.

"This marks yet another instance where the Timmins Police Service has found it necessary to lay formal charges as the offence in question was an overt and intentional violation of the applicable statute," reads the news release.

The driver of the vehicle, 21-year-old Damian Letourneau of Timmins, along with the passengers — a 17-year-old male and a 16-year-old female — are charged under the EMCPA. If convicted, the fine is $880 each.

Letourneau was also charged for driving with a suspended license, using an unauthorized plate, and operating a vehicle with no insurance.

Police say he has been released from custody and will appear in court June 24 to answer to the traffic-related charges.

This is the third time within the past week that charges have been laid locally for people breaking the EMCPA.

Last Saturday, five people from the Brantford area were charged by Timmins Police for breaching the EMCPA protocol.

Yesterday, two teens from the Toronto area were also charged under the act.

There is a provincial shutdown and stay-at-home order in effect until further notice. For more details on the latest regulations, visit the Ontario website here.
